Puppy Training Tips You’ll Be Glad To Know

Here is a collection of puppy training tips that are sure to make your life and everyone meets you dog easier.

  • When you praise your dog, say his name. If you are correcting a behavior say, “Bad dog.” When he hears his name that means good things are going to happen. You never want your dog to be fearful or hesitate to respond to you when he hears you calling his name.
  • Correct the behavior immediately. Delayed corrections don’t work because dogs can’t make the connection to something they did 30 seconds ago that you are mad at them for now.
  • Never hit or yell at your dog. It will make him fearful of you. You can train in a positive way that if enjoyable for both of you. That’s why we only recommend positive dog training.
  • Be consistent and only reward correct behavior. Don’t normally be enthusiastic when your dog jumps up on you and then mad at him when he jumps up the day you come home wearing your new suit or dress.
  • Keep the lessons short (10-15 minutes maximum) and twice a day if you can. Always end with playtime.
  • Your dog will pick up on your emotions. Never train if you are not in a good mood. Why stress your dog and yourself even more?
  • You can teach the “Give” command if you take away a toy from a young pup and then praise and reward them lavishly…and then give the toy back to her. Believe me, teaching this command early will come in handy for you the rest of your dog’s life.
