Puppy Training To Get Your Pet Started On the Right Paw
It’s so much fun to get a new puppy… and all you need to do is learn a few puppy training basics to make it a great experience for you and your new companion.
Puppy Proof Your Home Before the puppy arrives:
- Move vases and all those small items within dog level up and out of the way.
- Cover up those exposed electrical cords (especially if you have cords that hang down)…the ones that are so much fun to chew on.
- Keep your puppy away from carpeting (it’s just like grass to pee on, but more convenient).
- Set The Ground Rules and…be Consistent
- Everyone who lives in the house needs to work together to help the puppy understand the “dos and don’ts.”
For example, if you invite the puppy up on the couch to cuddle and then later someone else gets mad at him because he’s up on the couch… imagine the confusing signals!
Decide in advance where she’s allowed to go and climb up on – no exceptions, ever.
Keeping Your Puppy Out of Mischief
- Purchase a crate or at least a baby gate to keep him in a restricted area. I used to think that crate training was mean but from a dog’s perspective, it’s a safe, secure little house.
- When you can’t be with your puppy, by placing her in her crate, you know she won’t be getting into any mischief. Also, training with a crate makes housebreaking a whole lot easier.
- Dove’s training program for puppies covers all the basics of crate training, house training, potty training, dog obedience, and much more.
Happy Dog Training!
